About The Creed Cologne Brand
Creed is a luxury perfume brand that crafts distinct, original scents for the international market. While the business is based in London, they have a Parisian laboratory; boutiques in New York, Dubai, and Kuwait; and stalls and kiosks all around the world.
Part of what makes them stand out is their process—allegedly all of their perfumes are crafted in-house by father and son teams. The current perfumers are Olivier and Erwin Creed, the sixth and seventh generations of the Creed family.
Creed’s fragrance manufacturing is unique compared to other modern perfumers; they still use a 4,000-year old infusion technique to extract the scents and create clever, alluring combinations. The whole process—from weighing, mixing, to filtering—is done completely by hand to guarantee the highest quality scents.
The House of Creed has been around since 1760. Its founder, James Henry Creed, established a tailoring business in London. He later started designing fragrances for members of the nobility. Since then, the business (and their secret perfume recipes) have been passed down from father to son for generations.
Some of Creed’s most notable users include Queen Victoria, Winston Churchill, John F. Kennedy, and countless other celebrities, politicians, monarchs, and other influential figures.
Our Reviews Of The Top 10 Creed Cologne
This first entry on the list is one of the House of Creed’s signature scents. This cologne first hit the market in 1985, but decades later, it’s still selling like hotcakes because of its classic, stand-out scent. It’s a huge hit with the celebrity crowd but appeals to the everyman as well.
Green Irish Tweed smells very much like it sounds, like you’ve been transported to the countryside of Ireland in the spring. It’s fresh, fun, and fruity while still balancing out with some romance. Creed dubs it their “classic & distinguished” woody/fresh fragrance.
The top notes of Green Irish Tweed include lemon verbena and peppermint which gives it its famous crisp citrusy scent. The middle note contains violet leaves, while the base note is ambergris, iris, and sandalwood. It has a moderate sillage and the smell will really hit when freshly sprayed, but it mellows down into a smoother fruity fragrance soon after. It hits a delicate balance between citrus, floral, and woody that makes Green Irish Tweed distinct and simply unforgettable.
What I Love About Green Irish Tweed
It’s a very masculine fragrance but in a gentle sort of way. It’s not too bold or intimidating, it’s actually quite refined, elegant, and uplifting. Green Irish Tweed feels both simple and strong—its this complexity that makes it a versatile choice for most men.
You can take this cologne from day to night, from work to date night, from spring to winter. It particularly shines at special occasions and formal events due to its relaxed yet refined essence. If you want to convey an effortless sophistication, Green Irish Tweed is one to look out for.
What Could Be Better
Creed’s seminal scent is loved by many, but some find that it lacks intensity. It also has a very mature feel that might come off as dated to some people (but timeless to others). Some reviewers also commented that it has a strong and slightly off-putting grassy smell when you first open the bottle.
Millesime Imperial is another one of Creed’s citrus fragrances but with a completely different personality. Inspired by the shores of Sicilian beaches, this perfume is warm, light, and utterly luxurious. The regal, gold-accented bottle betrays how relaxing and juicy this fragrance actually is.
This fragrance is a combination of wood, musk, citrus, and marine elements that all come together to paint an idyllic picture: lazing around a beautiful, exotic beach on a hot summer afternoon.
The top notes consist of a citrusy blend of bergamot orange, lemon, and green mandarin; the middle note is simply iris. The base notes of sandalwood, amber, and musk complete this refreshing and mesmerizing scent. Some people say they also sniff hints of watermelon and sea salt, further enhancing the oceanic vibe.
Because of the warm, invigorating aroma, Millesime Imperial works best when worn in the daytime or in the summer.
What I Love About Millesime Imperial
This fragrance is particularly unique because it’s fun, light, and fresh. This is the kind of fragrance you wear on a casual day out. I think it adds a touch of warmth and whimsy to any outfit. Spritz this on for work and you’ll feel its energy pulsing throughout the day. It’s just versatile enough that you can also wear it to a laid-back bar, casual restaurant, or garden wedding. It’s also not too vibrant, but subtle and muted. Millesime Imperial is perfect for both men and women who want something more breezy and fruity to get them through the day.
What Could Be Better
This scent is really best for those not-so-serious days, so it’s not the smartest choice for more sophisticated occasions. It could also be a bit too potent for some, with the sweetness becoming more and more noticeable as the top note wears off.
Inspired by sixth generation perfumer Olivier Creed’s own travails in the Swiss Alps, Silver Mountain Water perfectly evokes the feeling of being in the cold, high altitudes. Spraying this on makes you feel ready for your next adventure.
Versatile and exhilarating, the fragrance profile of Silver Mountain Water leans towards fresh, green notes that breathe a new life into you. It’s cool, metallic, sporty, and a little bit playful. This best-seller helps you stay fresh in the springtime and summer or accentuates the cold atmosphere of fall/winter.
The top notes include bergamot, mandarin, and neroli (or bitter orange blossoms). Following those are the green tea and blackcurrant bud middle notes. Silver Mountain Water ends with a musky sandalwood base note that feels milky and modern all at once.
Just like the cold mountain breeze, there’s a little bit of a bite with Silver Mountain Water. The top notes feel sharp before the fragrance settles into a soothing, more natural green.
Silver Mountain Water can be worn by both men and women.
What I Love About Silver Mountain Water
Another popular Creed best-seller, Silver Mountain Water doesn’t disappoint. This is a great choice for the adventurer in you. It’s quite casual but very light and clean. Some people think it almost has a soapy quality to it, like a refreshing, energizing shower. I would perhaps describe this best as “zesty”, but it’s an interesting scent to see through to its final notes because it changes so much yet so seamlessly.
What Could Be Better
For the price, Silver Mountain Water doesn’t last as long as it could. Most people find that the smell wears off in about 6-7 hours after spraying.
Another concern is much more subjective. Some people felt like they were at the top of an icy mountain while wearing it (much like Olivier Creed probably intended) and described it to be uplifting, fresh, and thrilling. Others felt that it reminded them more of a gloomy, rainy day instead. The experience you could get from this cologne could be radically different from what I’ve described.
Even though it was launched just recently in 2010, Aventus quickly rose to the top and became Creed’s most sought-after scent. The unique blend of aromas was painstakingly crafted in Creed’s laboratory in Paris by father-son tandem Olivier and Erwin.
If I had to guess why it’s so successful, I’d say it’s because it perfectly embodies the legendary and unpredictable character it was inspired by. Creed wanted to create a perfume that celebrated the vigour, strength, and power of an emperor. The ideal Aventus man (or woman) is one who is driven, ambitious, dynamic, bold, and ready to take on whatever challenges life throws at them.
The top notes are bergamot, blackcurrant leaves, apple, and pineapple. The middle notes are pinkberries, birch, patchouli, and jasmine. Lastly, the final notes include musk, oakmoss, ambergris, and sultry vanilla.
Aventus is many things: decadent. Romantic. Striking. Creed struck a balance here between mass appeal and the sophisticated complexity of niche perfumes. The scent has gotten so popular that others have tried to imitate but failed to replicate the depth and power of the original.
What I Love About Aventus
Aventus is truly the perfect masculine blend. It’s intoxicating and sophisticated, so you can feel confident whether you’re on a romantic night out or at a formal event. The sweet, fruity notes are perfectly balanced by the earthy/smoky lower tones. No frag collection is complete without a bottle of Aventus. Plus, it just gets better with age—many people have found that their Aventus smells and performs even better a few months after purchasing it.
If you’re on the fence about which Creed cologne is best for you, you really can’t go wrong with the much-loved Aventus.
What Could Be Better
The biggest con is that it’s so popular, there are probably thousands or millions of other guys who wear this exact same scent—so much for being original! It also tends to have an overpowering smell when first spritzed.
Some reviewers say they love the scent, inconsistent performance, large variations in batches, and availability of “better” options in the same price range still doesn’t justify the steep cost.
This unisex fragrance was inspired by Indian splendor. While it can feel very strong and masculine, it makes a good fit for a powerful woman who has a commanding, sultry presence. Creed’s Original Santal is robust, warm, woody, and spicy—perfect for fall and the holiday season.
The top notes are easily recognizable as orange tree, ginger, and lemon. The middle notes (lavender, peppermint, rosemary, pinkberries) are more aromatic yet still have a little bit of a kick to them. Original Santal ends on some very strong woody base notes such as sandalwood, cedar, vanilla, benzoin, ambergris, and Tonkin musk.
It definitely falls under a “hot” fragrance, or something that feels warm and fiery. What you get is a mix of both “relaxing by the fire at Christmastime” and “strolling in the exotic Orient”. With Original Santal, you can feel wild, fun, and free no matter where you are.
What I Love About Original Santal
Call me biased, but I can’t get enough of spicy, aromatic fragrances. I think that the cinnamon and sandalwood notes make this a perfect evening perfume for both men and women.
The quality of the ingredients really shines here. While there are certainly similar, cheaper options, Creed’s Original Santal wins out on depth, sophistication, and subtlety.
What Could Be Better
It seems like this scent won’t be seeing much use year-round. It works best at a specific time of day, temperature, and season. Cold winter mornings or cool fall nights are the sweet spot for the Original Santal to work its magic without feeling too hot.
Creed’s Original Vetiver sets itself apart by reinventing the traditional vetiver fragrance. Instead of using just one part of the vetiver plant, it incorporates all three parts for a stronger, richer, earthier scent. Vivacious and sophisticated, this is one fresh fragrance you don’t want to miss out on.
Creed successfully put a modern twist on an old classic, so it feels oddly yet familiar yet still unique. Original Vetiver feels genuinely timeless because of this. It’s cool, clean, light, with a hint of spice. It’s a great choice for daytime, spring nights, or relaxed casual outings.
The top notes Creed included are bergamot, bitter orange, mandarin, and vetiver leaves for that added freshness. That eventually gives way to notes of white pepper, coriander, and pinkberries, followed by the baseline of sandalwood, more vetiver, ambergris, and Tonkin musk. It also has a gingery kick that gives it a warm and sensual edge.
This 2004 concoction is a subtle sweet burst of citrus and zest that dies down into a vintage musk. Spray in the morning to awaken your senses and get ready for your day. Original Vetiver is great for the man or woman who wants to feel serious and sophisticated at work, home, or elsewhere.
What I Love About Original Vetiver
Major props to Creed for taking something a common scent and turning it into their own. Original Vetiver is reminiscent of heady vintage colognes without feeling derivative. It’s a lot more grown-up than some of the other fragrances on this list; it feels like the mark of a true gentleman. It gives off a clean, shower-fresh smell that feels natural, rather than an overpowering and obviously artificial scent.
What Could Be Better
Fans of the traditional vetiver scent may be surprised at how delicate and subtle the vetiver is in this fragrance. The vetiver kind of blends into the rest of the citrusy and spicy notes. Some people think it actually feels and smells too clean, lacking the earthy warmth of traditional vetiver essence.
I would consider Himalaya to be Silver Mountain Water’s mysterious, exotic cousin. Not a surprise, considering that Olivier Creed created this scent to be nostalgic of his climb up the Tibetan mountains. Where Silver Mountain Water is energetic, Himalaya is subdued. You could also think of it as Green Irish Tweed but covered in snow.
Creed seems to imagine the Himalayan man to be fearless, confident, and rugged. A man’s man, if you will—one who enjoys the great outdoors. Himalaya goes well with the colder months of fall, winter, and early spring.
The top notes feature bergamot, grapefruit, lemon, and mandarin. The middle notes are made up of pinkberries, nutmeg, cedarwood, sandalwood, vetiver, and pepper. This classy fragrance closes off with Creed’s signature ambergris, musk, and Tonka bean.
Himalaya strikes a balance between being adventurous and being harmonious. One reviewer described it as the feeling of melting snow. If you want to feel like you’re trekking through a wooded mountainside every day, look no further than Himalaya by Creed.
What I Love About Himalaya
It’s quite subtle, but I like how Himalaya is a variation on Creed’s other famous scents. It’s obvious that they’re trying to create nuanced, complex fragrances that evoke completely different emotions to match a diverse range of personalities.
Himalaya is a lot less intrusive and more well-rounded than similar scents. It may not be as attention-grabbing as other scents, but it fits people with a quiet and reserved nature.
What Could Be Better
Projection and longevity are just decent, especially considering the price tag. Some people also don’t think that the simplicity of the fragrance is worth hundreds of dollars—especially when it reminds them of barbershop shaving foam instead of luxury cologne.
Royal Water is a classic, invigorating scent for the modern gentleman or lady. It was inspired by the new generation of young royals which is embodied by its balance of vibrant, brisk tones and understated glamour. It feels incredibly pure, honest, natural, and light—without ever being boring. It almost feels like you’re not wearing perfume at all!
The top notes consist of verbena, lemon, mandarin,, clementine, bergamot and peppermint. The middle notes consist of basil, pepper, cumin, and pinkberries. The signature Creed base notes of ambergris and Tonkin musk make an appearance as well, of course.
Royal Water performs well all year-round but it best matches the breeziness of spring and summer.
What I Love About Royal Water
Elegant enough to be your signature scent, Royal Water is an olfactory masterpiece. The blend is not too strong, not too citrusy, and not too musky. It’s just the perfect blend to wear anywhere, any time. It’s fairly easy to wear and complements pretty much every personality.
Even if it feels light and airy to wear, the fragrance surprisingly lasts a long time. You can get a solid 7 or 8 hours of wear out of it before the base notes start to fade. This is a testament to the high quality of both the ingredients and the Creed infusion process.
What Could Be Better
There seems to be two versions being sold on the market with potentially different reformulations. The other version floating around has more floral top notes, reminiscent of geranium or hyacinth. This could either be an issue of mislabeling or simply a bad knock-off, but it’s worth looking out for.
I was personally excited to review Creed’s Virgin Island Water because it’s the most unique and adventurous of the bunch. It really captures the spirit of an uplifting, tropical paradise. One spray and you’ll find yourself hanging back in the beautiful Caribbean, enjoying the sun and sipping some cocktails.
The top notes are white bergamot, lime, and mandarin. The middle notes are hibiscus, ylang-ylang, and Indian jasmine. There’s no ambergris in this one; instead, Creed includes Tonkin musk and tropical wood for the base notes.
The strong coconut and lime fragrance can lean either masculine or feminine, depending on who wears it. It’s definitely a crowd-pleaser. This is a great refreshing summer scent for hotter climates with high humidity.
What I Love About Virgin Island Water
The smell is beautiful, creamy, and boozy. It’s well-balanced, not too sweet, and has a pretty pleasant, musky dry-down. I get an extraordinary rush while wearing this. The vibrant summer energy is infectious! Virgin Island Water is great for the young and young at heart.
What Could Be Better
Some people experience limited projection and longevity with this one, with performance as poor as 1-2 hours.
The Creed family sure likes their travels. Another entry to the global fragrance line is Erolfa, a fragrance that makes you nostalgic for the Mediterranean. This one was crafted with nautical notes that could appeal to the family man.
The top notes are bergamot, lemon, orange, violet, cumin, basil, rosemary, and melon. The middle notes are cyclamen, jasmine, ginger, and coriander. Cedarwood, sandalwood, ambergris, moss, and musk make up Erolfa’s final notes.
Erolfa is perfect for the modern father who is loving, generous, fun-filled, and adventurous. It’s relatively similar to the Millesime Imperial but much more masculine and sublime. Everyone agrees that the use of ambergris here is absolute genius. It really conveys the serene nostalgia of watching the ocean waves crash against rocks and turn into mist.
What I Love About Erolfa
Erolfa captures the oceanside vibe better than any other scent on the market. In fact, it’s leagues beyond its closest competitor, thanks to the impressive balance, carefully-crafted formulation, and high-quality ingredients.
What Could Be Better
Without this one particular flaw, the Erolfa could have been the perfect masterpiece for Creed. I’d say the Erolfa has weak to moderate performance in both the projection and longevity department.
Why You Should Choose Creed Cologne Over Other Brands Of Cologne
With literally thousands of other fragrances on the market (some of them at a significantly more budget-friendly price), why should you buy Creed? Here are the top reasons to splurge a little on this luxury cologne.
Wearing Creed perfume brands you as a man or woman of sophisticated tastes. The brand is leagues above cheap and designer perfumes in terms of status. Only classy, modern people wear Creed—and you could be one of them. Plus, knowing that you’re wearing an excellent, high-quality cologne will inspire you to be more confident and self-assured.
The House of Creed is a renowned fragrance designer that has been producing amazing perfumes for hundreds of years. Buying Creed cologne lets you in on a centuries-old tradition of excellence and elegance. According to Emmanuel Saujet, the co-founder and CEO of International Cosmetics & Perfumes, “The experience you get by wearing the [Creed] scent is that you are a part of history.”
While others may try to imitate, no one else can quite capture fragrances the way that the House of Creed can. They’re the only fashion house in the modern age that still uses the infusion technique to bring out complex, high-quality aromas. They also have some incredibly talented noses on staff, including the 6th generation Creed scion, Olivier.
The Creed name is synonymous with both history and excellence. All of their fragrances are crafted expertly to meet the highest industry standards. They only use the finest rare natural ingredients when manufacturing their original creations. When you buy Creed, you can expect a scent that is both timeless yet modern.
These perfumes are crafted to a last a long time, even without constant re-spritzing. Because Creed uses a high concentration of handpicked essential oils (up to 25% in their eau de parfum formulas), the base notes can linger for as long as 24 hours after spraying. Even their more “watered-down” budget colognes can last upwards of 6 hours due to the quality of the oils.
Creed makes scents for both men and women, but they also have unisex options that combine both masculine and feminine energies. Whether you like deep and aromatic or clean and crisp, there is a Creed scent that matches your personality best.
You’ll have more than enough options to choose from that you can get different perfumes for different seasons, occasions, or even times of the day. Finally, Creed is available at different price points to cater to a wider crowd.
Why Creed Cologne Is So Expensive
There are many reasons to love Creed cologne, but the price is the biggest thing that gets in the way for most people. With many of their fragrances retailing for hundreds of dollars, Creed easily exceeds the cost of other well-known designer perfumes. Not many people are able to afford this hefty price tag, but it’s part of what makes Creed so sought-after and exclusive.
For the right buyer, Creed is a worthy investment. They’ve been creating high-quality perfumes since the 1700s, so they have ultra-refined techniques and formulas. Unlike cheap, one-note colognes on the market, Creed’s scents are unusual, distinct, and complex. I can describe their fragrances as classy, elegant, and dressed-up—perfect for special occasions or whenever you want to feel like a million bucks.
The traditional infusion technique that Creed uses extracts the natural essence of their aromatics. It takes a lot of time, money, and material to produce even the smallest amount of essence, but it doesn’t have the artificial or muted fragrance of scents replicated in the lab. This, coupled with the purest ingredients, produces a strong, genuine, and all-natural fragrance that far exceeds any synthetic imitations.
Lastly, people are willing to pay a premium for something that is sophisticated, elegant, and high-class. The Creed name brand is associated with prestige, glamour. When you buy Creed, you are part of an exclusive club whose members include high-profile celebrities, influential public figures, and even royalty.
How To Choose The Right Scent For You
Unlike flashy wardrobes or stand-out hairstyles, the right fragrance is a subtle yet impactful way to demonstrate your personality. Each person is unique, so the best Creed cologne will differ for everyone. Here are some of the things to consider when choosing the right cologne for you.
Your scent needs to jive with your style, mannerisms, and overall vibe. Think of words that describe you. Are you loud, bold, strong? Are you masculine and rugged? Sexy? Playful? Or are you more subtle, introverted? Your cologne should match your wardrobe and your personality to get the best fit.
Composition is just a fancy way of saying that you should like scents and ingredients that make up your perfume. Each bottle is a special blend of smells that make it different from any other product out there. Manufacturers will often describe the “notes”—like floral, citrus, or earthy—to help you pick out the one you like, but don’t always rely on the product description. When in doubt, follow your nose.
In the same way that you would wear different clothes for work, a romantic date, a career-changing business meeting, a casual day out, and a sophisticated black-tie event, you could wear different scents as well. Some colognes are more versatile than others while others are designed to fit and enhance a specific mood or occasion.
You can wear whatever perfume you want whenever you want, but some scents are crafted to complement the season or weather. Lighter florals and bright, citrus notes naturally go well with spring or summer days while dark, musky, and spicy aromas are a favourite go-to for the fall/winter months.
Like anything else, trends come and go. The perfume industry is no exception. One decade will see the rise of striking scents while the next might see the complete opposite. If you already know the general “family” of scents you’re going for, you’ll have an easier time picking out a scent based on its manufacturing date.
Also, perfumes are manufactured and sold in batches, and a perfume manufactured in 2010 may smell slightly different from the same kind manufactured in 2018. This is especially true with the process involved in creating Creed colognes since the natural ingredients are never exactly the same.
Projection & Longevity
The term “project” just means how far your cologne’s smell will travel or “project”. A stronger perfume will be immediately smelled by the people around you, even from a few feet away. Others are more subtle and will only be noticeable by someone in close proximity.
Longevity describes how long the perfume lasts after spraying. Depending on the kind of perfume, it can last anywhere from under an hour to over 24 hours on a single spritz.
Tips For Buying And Using Creed Cologne
- Read reviews and do your research before committing to a Creed cologne. It’s not an insignificant amount of money, so it’s better to be safe.
- Don’t rely on other people’s feedback; test the fragrance out yourself. Perfumes are designed to work with and adapt to your natural smell, which is why some colognes that smell amazing on your friends may not smell great on you.
- If you can’t decide on one you like, don’t blow hundreds of dollars on a full-sized bottle. Creed offers sample sets at an affordable price. You can choose 3 fragrances you’re interested in, bring them home, and try them out.
- Less is more. Don’t overapply perfumes or else it will become too overpowering. A dab or two will suffice, and only re-apply when absolutely necessary.
- Learn how to apply cologne correctly. Do not spray on your clothing, don’t rub the perfume into your skin, and don’t spray into the air and walk into the mist—that’s just a waste of product.
Creed Cologne FAQ
Creed may be a big-ticket item, especially if you’re used to cheaper fragrances, but most of them are worth every dollar spent. Find the right one, and you’ll have a reliable, go-to cologne for life. This guide can’t decide which Creed cologne is the best one for you, but it can equip you with the knowledge to make the right decision.
If you want a tried and tested fragrance (and don’t mind gunning for a popular scent), the Aventus is your best bet. If spicy and sensual is more your speed, try the Original Santal. For a vibrant, sunny smell, you can choose from either Erolfa or Virgin Island Water.
Remember that finding the perfect fragrance is a journey; don’t be scared to make mistakes, try new things, and mix it up once in a while!
