My previous job as a hotelier required me to maintain a clean-shaven look every day. Regular razors gave me painful bumps on the neck and I didn’t have the time to visit a barber every other day. The internet told me that an electric shaver would be my best option as it’s both comfortable and highly functional.
But here’s the catch: most top-branded electric shavers I found were way out of my budget. So I continued my research until I found something that worked for my limited budget. My search finally ended with Remington F5-5800.
I had heard about this brand before. I knew it’s not as popular or hyped as Braun or Philips Norelco but I couldn’t care less. All I wanted was a no-nonsense, powerful, durable and low-maintenance shaver without spending big bucks.
As it turned out, Remington F5-5800 Foil Shaver met all my criteria perfectly. Is it the best electric shaver ever? No.
But is it the best you can get in this price range? A big yes, in my opinion.
I am going to explain the reasons in the following sections. But before that, here’s a breakdown of its key features, in case you are in a hurry.

Who Will Benefit the Most from Remington F5-5800?
Currently, I own two other electric shavers, one foil, and one rotary-style shaver from two different well-reputed brands. Both cost two times more than Remington F5-5800. While Remington can’t beat the speed and shaving closeness of its expensive counterparts, I would score it 100/100 for shaving comfort and convenience.
The shave it delivers is not razor-close, but still close enough to make you look neat and presentable in a meeting or date. As far as the shaving comfort and smoothness are concerned, I don’t see much difference between Remington and higher-end shavers.
Moreover, it has solid battery backup, sparing you the trouble of charging frequently. One full charge will pack enough fuel for one week’s worth shaving (given you only stick to grooming your facial hair).
The bottom line being, if you want a basic tool for day-to-day shaving, something that works well on both long beard and short stubble, this is it. It’s not the fastest or the most powerful electric shaver to buy, but it’s definitely a great value for money.
What’s inside the Box?
Upon opening the box, you will find:
- The main shaving unit.
- A shaving head cover.
- A charger.
- A cleaning brush.
Despite being an inexpensive model, the chrome finish on the rich black frame lends a plush feel to it. I loved the addition of a tiny little cleaning brush in the package. It helps me clear off the small hair bits from the blades easily. I just wish it had a carrying pouch, though. But nevermind.
Top Features of Remington F5-5800 Foil Shaver Analyzed and Explained
This is the part you need to read carefully to understand this product inside out. I have tried my best to explain how this device really works and how effectively it serves the purpose:
Interceptor Pre-trimmer for Long Hair
The interceptors are a combination of tiny combs and scissors located between the two foils. They grab the long hair strands and clip them, enabling the foils to cut very close to the skin.
With this technology, you can tackle even a four-week-old dense beard with amazing precision. This minimizes pulling and snagging too, resulting in a pain-free and smooth shave.
Adjustable Pivoting Head
The wide flexing shaver head on this device swiftly adapts to the rapidly changing contours of the face. This not only results in a comfortable shaving experience but also reduces the risk of scrapes and bruises.
Before this, I had always struggled to clean the fine hair from tricky areas e.g the area below my upper lip, jawline, and neckline. Remington’s Flex head effortlessly cuts the pesky, super fine hair from these areas.
Look and Feel
The Remington F5-5800 looks promising right out of the box. It doesn’t have the cheap plastic look most budget electric shavers are infamous for. The handle is slightly longer than I was expecting, but that actually resulted in a great balance.
Let me also note that the device is incredibly lightweight. I loved how it doesn’t fatigue my arm at all after several minutes of use. I am a globe-trotter and this compact kit would fit my carry-on bag without gobbling up important luggage space.
As I said right at the beginning of this article, it’s a no-nonsense shaver. There’s just an on/off button on the handle. No variable speed setting or multiple comb attachments to fiddle with here.
Pop-up Trimmer for Detailing
There’s a pop-up trimmer built right into the device, ideal for shaping and detailing mustache and sideburns. It comes handy while shaving the pubes as well, especially the difficult spot around the balls.
My only gripe is that the trimmer is positioned awkwardly at the side. This makes touching up the goatee quite tricky as my view gets blocked by the big razor. Not a dealbreaker, just something I wanted to bring to your attention.
Long Battery Life
While Remington promised 60-minutes of runtime after full charge, I kept my expectations low. But to my utter surprise, the battery does last for nearly 60-minutes once fully charged (which takes about 1-1.5 hours).
If I am only shaving my face, I can easily go a week or longer without charging it. I don’t even need to carry the charger if I am out on a short trip.
I liked the tiny but significant addition of an LED fuel gauge which shows me how much charge is left. It’s totally fine if the battery is drained and I forget to charge it at night. It has a 5-minute quick charge feature which allows 1-2 shaves easily. On top of this, you can use the shaver while charging it well. Even many higher-priced models don’t have this feature.
After each shave, you just need to rinse the shaving head with tap water. That’s it. I would occasionally remove the blades (which is very easy to do, by the way) and remove the gunk with the cleaning brush included in the box.
The blades are sculpted from premium-quality surgical stainless steel. So rusting or water damage is the last thing you need to worry about. F5-5800 is a godsend for people like me who hate the idea of spending hours disassembling a shaver followed by disinfecting and oiling the blades.
What Makes Remington F5-5800 Stand out?
User-friendly and Comfortable
This simple foil shaver would make a great gift for somebody who is not comfortable with modern feature-packed devices with complex settings. It works absolutely fine even if you don’t prep your skin well before shaving.
Just make sure that your skin is completely dry, otherwise, the blade high blade friction could affect your shaving experience.
However, if you have sensitive skin, I would suggest you wash your face with warm water and apply a pre-shave to avoid skin irritation.
I have a very sensitive skin and as I prep my skin adequately. That’s how I ensure a clean shave without troubling my skin at all.
I sometimes shave too fast to make it to my office on time and still manage to dodge injuries. Despite not having any special feature for sensitive skin people, it is completely safe to maneuver around the most sensitive areas of the body, including the private parts.
Decent Performance for the Money
F5-5800 features two foil cutters, which means the shaver heads will contour from two different angles. It does a great job of cleaning up the whiskers from tight spots without pinching or pulling. You can use it for keeping your body hairline in check as well. The flex head also reduces the chances of nicks and cuts, even when you shave really fast or accidentally put a lot of pressure. By the way, its replacement foils are easily available and affordable too.
I think the interceptors deserve a special mention here. It trims the long hair strands before passing them onto the foil cutter. This allows the foil to actuate a clean shave without snagging or pinching.
Virtually Maintenance-free and Travel-friendly
Great battery life and lightweight- F5-5800 has both the qualities required in a travel-friendly electric shaver. I don’t even have to worry about maintaining blades or detaching the components for cleansing after each shave.
All I do is turn it on, shave, run it under tap water, shake off the excess water, put it back in the cabinet. I would occasionally open the shaver head, blow off the excess hair with the cleaning brush to avoid blade clogging. That’s it.
It can’t get easier than this unless you own Philips Norelco Electric Shaver 8900 which uses a self-cleaning system.
What about the Potential Drawbacks?
Like every other machine ever made, F5-5800 is also not free of flaws. At this price point, one would definitely expect some serious drawbacks. But fortunately, I didn’t find anything that I’d consider a dealbreaker.
My only disappointment worth highlighting here is that it takes me 3-5 passes to get a baby butt-cheek smooth skin. Having said that, expecting a super close shave with one pass at this price would be very unreasonable, I guess. Besides that, really don’t mind several passes as long as it shaves close enough without triggering rashes or itching.
Pros and Cons
While I am expecting all of you to read this article thoroughly from start to end, I understand if you are short on time or patience. For those who want a quick summary of what’s good and bad about this product, here it is:

- Very easy to use.
- Exceptionally cost-effective
- 60-minutes of battery life and 5-minutes quick charge.
- Great contouring ability, minimizes the risk of cuts.
- Can be used virtually anywhere on the body, including the private part.
- For maintenance, all you have to do is rinse the shaver under tap water.
- Takes several passes to get a real smooth and clean shave.

Final Verdict: Is Remington F5-5800 Foil Shaver Worth It?
If you want to splurge on an electric shaver, that’s completely fine. Brands like Braun, Philips, Panasonic have introduced some really unique and advanced features lately to take their game up a notch.
Remington, on the other hand, likes to keep things simple but functional which helps them to keep their prices low.
To sum up, If all you want is a power-packed cordless shaver with long battery life for your daily grooming needs, F5-5800 totally fits the bill.
